Biography
Zhang Ziyi was raised in Western Beijing under the aegis of her mother, a retired kindergarten teacher, and her father, an economist. She began her brief six-year stint as a dancer at the age of 11, and although she was able to gain a few awards and win a few contests, it gradually became apparent to her that her future in the field of dancing was not bright. She soon enrolled in the China Central Drama Academy in Beijing to study acting. Her on-screen debut was Wo de fu qin mu qin (1999) (aka 'The Road Home', but literally 'My Father and My Mother'), a film by prominent 'Fifth Generation' Chinese director Yimou, Zhang. After the film was completed, the media quickly forced upon her the dubious nickname of 'Little Gong Li', since a number of Zhang Yimou's films, including Da hong deng long gao gao gua (1991) (better known as 'Raise the Red Lantern') and Ju Dou (1990) featured the 'Big' Gong Li. However, it turns out that the intention of this nickname was not to offer a flattering comparison with the older, more established actress. It was actually a pejorative label which was concocted at about the same time that rumors of a love affair between the younger Zhang and the elder Zhang (who is well over twice her age) began to circulate. For those of you who might not remember, Zhang Yimou was onced engaged in an extramarital affair with the real Gong Li. To this day, neither Zhang Ziyi nor Zhang Yimou has confirmed these salacious rumors. Juicy gossip aside, the younger Zhang's breakthrough performance as Jen in Wo hu cang long (2000) ('Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon') propelled the spry young girl onto the world stage. Although director Ang Lee originally wanted the part to go to a more reputable Taiwanese actress, he decided to take his chances by casting Zhang Ziyi in the role, and it paid off. Zhang's star is ascending at meteoric speed, having already worked with the likes of Zhang Yimou, Ang Lee, Yun-Fat Chow (one of her idols), and Michelle Yeoh. She says that she aspires to learn English as a prerequisite to entering the Hollywood scene.

Yamila Diaz Rahi was born in Argentina, to a doctor father and an old folks home manager mother. Of Lebanese and Spanish descent, Yamila and her two sisters, Maria and Yael, were raised in Argentina.
With no original intention to become a model, everything changed for Yamila when she was spotted by a modeling agency scout in Buenos Aires, where Yamila was an Economics student. After this chance encounter, she flew to Milan where her career as a model began.
It took a while for the exotic beauty to break through, and she started off by doing department store catalogues for several years. But it was after her work in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Calendar in 1999 that Yamila skyrocketed to model status.

HE daughter of free-lovin', counterculture types who named her after the Minnesota town in which she was born (and she's the lucky one—her siblings are named Yuri, Sunyata, and Jubal), Winona Horowitz enjoyed what you'd call an unorthodox childhood—the Horowitz clan's idea of family bonding was a good-and-rowdy protest against Agent Orange. It will come as no surprise then, that her godfather was the late L.S.D. guru, Dr. Timothy Leary (Winona's father, Michael, formerly served as Leary's archivist and ran a bookstore called Flashback Books—need we say more?), or that Beat poet Allen Ginsberg rounded out her parents' circle of friends. Winona hastens to explain when asked about her rather nontraditional upbringing that her parents are politically active intellectuals, and not acid-dropping, Grateful Dead-dogging clichés. Leary himself summed them up as ''hippie intellectuals and psychedelic scholars,'' a judgment bolstered by the fact that the couple collaborated on a book detailing Aldous Huxley's psychedelic experiences, and then co-authored a book alleging that Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women while dosed up on opium. Growing up in a house where a high value was placed on reading, Winona's bible became J.D. Salinger's coming-of-age novel, The Catcher in the Rye. With a world view shaped by such iconoclastic parents and an idol the likes of Holden Caulfield, it's little wonder that Winona would one day prove so deft at portraying offbeat characters.
When she was 7 years old, Winona's family repaired to an upscale commune located on a 300-acre plot of land in the northern California town of Elk, where they coexisted with seven other families and a bunch of horses. The kids obviously didn't have televisions (after all, they had no electricity in their homes), but Winona's mother operated a movie theatre in an old barn, where she screened the classic films that provided her enthralled daughter with the key to her future. After a year of living in the sticks, the family moved back to the relative civilization of Petaluma, California. During her first week at her new school, Winona, a fresh-off-the-commune tomboy, was jumped by a gang of pubescent thugs who proceeded to trounce her good for being such an obvious wuss. (''They thought I was a gay boy,'' she has offered by way of explanation.) The unfortunate thrashing yielded fortunate results: Ryder earned a stint of home study, but more importantly, her parents let her enroll in acting classes at the prestigious American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, where bullies were few and far between. Talent scouts spotted her on the A.C.T. stage and had her test for the role of Jon Voight's daughter in Desert Bloom. She didn't get the part, but her audition was impressive enough to gain her representation by Triad Artists, which set her up with a role as a poetry-loving teen in Lucas (1986). When the credits rolled, Winona Horowitz officially became Winona Ryder; her new surname was inspired by a Mitch Ryder album belonging to her father.
Ryder's memorable performance in the generally unmemorable film led in turn to a role in the treacly and little-heeded Square Dance (1987); her next role as an anti-war activist in the critically reviled 1969 was certainly nothing to write Petaluma about, either. Ryder's career tide finally turned for the better with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (1988), in which she played a death-courting, black-garbed teen named Lydia, who understandably has more in common with the ghosts in the attic (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) than with her own truly insufferable parents. She again plumbed the darker teenage impulses in the black-as-coal comedy Heathers (1989)—to date, the favorite film of her prodigious career—which had her conspiring with a preternaturally sardonic Christian Slater to murder members of high school cliques and then make the deaths appear to be suicides. That same year, she turned in a fine performance (in a not-so-fine movie) as the 13-year-old bride and first cousin of Jerry Lee Lewis, in Great Balls of Fire! Her next few films flopped, as well, but one thing was becoming certain: Ms. Ryder had the warped teen thang pretty well nailed. For Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands, she donned an ill-conceived blonde wig to play a more conventional teen—a cheerleader no less—swept up in an unconventional Beauty-and-the-Beast attraction with a bizarre creature played winningly by Ryder's then-fiancé, Johnny Depp. While the film certainly was the most auspicious outing of her career up to that point, the fact remained that Ryder was fed up with playing a teenager, forever poised tremulously on the cusp of maturity.
ndependent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch helped bridge the generation gap somewhat by writing a special part for Ryder in his anthology Night on Earth, in which she played an L.A. cabbie who dreams of becoming a mechanic. On the maturity scale, the film was a baby step, to be sure. Ryder would have made a far greater stride in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather, Part III, but she was forced to withdraw from the production due to a respiratory infection brought on by exhaustion; her departure from the project led to a particularly unfortunate casting choice of the director's daughter Sofia, an inexperienced and ultimately inept substitute.
Luckily, Ryder and Coppola's dealings were far from completed. After signing with Creative Artists Agency, where she had the foresight to reserve the right to review all scripts submitted to the agency, Ryder latched onto a promising screenplay based on Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. She approached Coppola with the script, and the rest is movie history. Coppola's decadent and erotic Bram Stoker's Dracula provided Ryder with the break she had been looking for: finally, for the first time in her career, she was playing a mature woman, and what's more, the woman in question was the object of the immortal count's blood-soaked desire. Ryder also managed a fairly convincing British accent (the same could not be said for co-star Keanu Reeves), but not everyone was convinced that she pulled the role off. If critics were divided on the ultimate effectiveness of Ryder's performance in the film, they were in absolute agreement over her Oscar-nominated supporting turn as May Welland in The Age of Innocence, a film adapted from Edith Wharton's merciless portrait of 19th-century New York aristocracy.
In 1994, Ryder stepped out of her crinolines to achieve iconic status as the quintessential Gen-Xer in Reality Bites, held her own in a cream-of-the-crop cast in the butchered adaptation of Isabel Allende's The House of the Spirits, and then capped off the year with an Oscar-nominated (this time in the Best Actress contest) performance as Jo March in Little Women. Ryder dedicated the latter film to Polly Klaas, a young girl from Ryder's hometown who was kidnapped and brutally murdered in 1993. (At the time of the crime, Ryder put up a $200,000 reward for information leading to the child's attacker, and she continues to be a strong supporter of the Polly Klaas Foundation.)
With the delicate, ethereal beauty of a consumptive heroine of yore, and an impressive range, Ryder has already proven herself to be one of the most luminous and successful interpreters of the 19th century. But considering her card-carrying Generation-X status, her well-publicized love history (which includes steamy chapters titled ''Johnny Depp,'' ''Christian Slater,'' ''Daniel Day-Lewis,'' ''David Pirner,'' ''David Duchovny,'' ''David Pirner, Part II,'' ''Matt Damon,'' ''Chris Noth,'' and ''Beck''), and her equal virtuosity at playing latter-day leads (as evidenced in 1995's How To Make an American Quilt), Ryder is undoubtedly very present in the present. In 1996, she rounded out the star-studded cast of Al Pacino's Looking for Richard, playing Lady Anne in Al Pacino's documentary about performing William Shakespeare's Richard III; and she reunited with her Age of Innocence co-star and ex-flame Daniel Day-Lewis in an adaptation of Arthur Miller's The Crucible. The daughter of a psychologist and a college professor, Thurman was raised in Amherst, Massachusetts and Woodstock, New York. She attended a preparatory school in New England, where at fifteen she was discovered by two New York agents. At sixteen she transferred to a Professional Children's School in New York City in order to pursue an acting career.
Thurman's entrance onto the mainstream film scene began with Johnny Be Good, opposite Anthony Michael Hall. But it was her role as the goddess Venus in Terry Gilliam's 1988 fantasy The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen which brought her international acclaim. This striking and versatile actress went on to receive critical acclaim for her portrayal of a virginal 18th Century convent girl, Cecile de Volanges, seduced by John Malkovich in Stephen Frears' Dangerous Liaisons. The following year she starred opposite Fred Ward and Maria de Medeiros in Philip Kaufman's Henry And June playing the neurotic and erotic bisexual spouse of Henry Miller. She then played Daphne McBain; one of a trio of Dabney Coleman's spoiled children in the comedy Where The Heart Is, directed by John Boorman.
In 1991, Thurman starred opposite Richard Gere and Kim Bassinger as Diana, a conniving therapy patient in Phil Joanou's thriller Final Analysis. She then reunited with Malkovich in the thriller Jennifer 8, playing Andy Garcia's blind girlfriend, Helena. In Mad Dog And Glory, she played a barmaid who becomes an indentured servant to Robert De Niro for saving Bill Murray's life. Her most eccentric movie to date is Gus Van Sant's film, Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, in which she played Sissy Hankshaw, a big-thumbed, bisexual hippie hitchhiker.
In 1995, Thurman received an Academy Award nomination for Quentin Tarantino's critically lauded Pulp Fiction, in which she played Mia Wallace, a sexy and comedic mobster's wife. Later that year, she was seen in the period romance A Month By The Lake, with Vanessa Redgrave and the contemporary romance Beautiful Girls directed by Ted Demme. Thurman next appeared in The Truth About Cats And Dogs, Barman & Robin, Gattaca, opposite Ethan Hawke, Les Miserables with Liam Neeson and The Avengers.

She's a child prodigy who wrote her first song at age eight, a blond-locked Colombian who speaks three languages and loves only in Spanish. She's a perfectionist who spends hours in the studio; she needs to be close to nature but her passion is the crackle of electric guitars. The swift ascent of Shakira's star is the stuff of Latin American legend. At the age of 13, she signed her first recording contract with Sony Music Colombia and released her first album Magia. After graduating from secondary school, Shakira decided to dedicate her life to the music, recording Peligro ('Danger') and Pies Descalzos, ('Barefeet') in the years that followed, which broke her in Latin America , Brazil (over one million sales) and Spain. 'I think I am celebrating life more than ever,' said Shakira. 'I had a slightly narrow vision of love. Now I am feeling unguarded, and it feels great. I feel washed clean of the way I looked at things in the past, which is why I am calling the album LAUNDRY SERVICE.'
The most extraordinary thing about LAUNDRY SERVICE is the way she was able to translate her Latin American sensibility into a new language. The idea to do songs in English first came up during Shakira's partnership with Emilio and Gloria Estefan. Gloria initiated the process by translating 'Ojos Así,' a song that appeared on Shakira's last album, Dónde Están Los Ladrones? (Where are the Thieves?). 'I wanted to have her involved in this somehow because she was one of the people that really believed that I could make a record in English,' said Shakira.
But nurturing the belief that she could write songs in English was a strong challenge. 'The first song I wrote by myself for this record was 'Objection,' remembered Shakira. 'I prayed and asked God to send me a good song today, and I remember I started writing the song a couple of hours after. I wrote the music and lyrics at the same time, and when that happens it's really magical to me.' When she completed 'Objection,' she knew that she could write ten more, so she packed up her loved ones and set up portable studios in rural Uruguay. Taking in the primordial energy of natural surroundings, Shakira came up with a crop of new songs more introspective, more passionate than any she had written before. 'I had to find a way to express my ideas and my feelings, my day to day stories in English. So I bought a couple of rhyming dictionaries, read poetry, and authors like Leonard Cohen and Walt Whitman,' she said.
'I would feel love in Spanish but I would think about how to express that love in English. Afterwards that became such a natural process, and if you check the subject of my songs, most of them talk about my own experiences and feelings and what I was actually going through in my life,' said Shakira. 'Is impossible not to write about love.. It's the great mystery of life. It makes me ask myself new questions every day.'
Shakira is one of the poetic songwriters of her generation and considered the best female lyricist in Latin America: On the ballad 'Underneath Your Clothes,' she claims as territory a man she likens to 'a song written by the hands of God'; on the blues-rocker 'Fool' her 'tears make a sea of desert.' But she is still as quirky around the edges as she's always been-on 'Ready for the Good Times' she remembers close encounters with roaches; on 'Poem to a Horse' she scolds a friend dulled by 'hydroponic pot,' and on 'The One,' she rewards her true love by shaving her legs and learning how to cook.
'I try to represent only myself, but there are many women that identify with me,' said Shakira. 'I am definitely not a woman who washes her husband's clothes every day. I hope I don't sound like a feminist leader saying these things. I just try to be honest the way I write.'
There's no doubt that Shakira has maintained her creative integrity with her new project. But perhaps more importantly, LAUNDRY SERVICE is a record that reflects her deep love for the basics of rock production. 'I felt that I needed to make an organic record with real players in the studio playing live music and doing it like they made records 30 years ago, in the old times,' said Shakira. 'We used an engineer named Terry Manning, who's worked with ACDC, Led Zeppelin, Lenny Kravitz. He's somebody from the old school. I was determined not to depend on too many electronic sounds, and he definitely understood that.'
On LAUNDRY SERVICE there is a very strong dedication to old-fashioned rock riffs, to the soulful, bluesy singing styles of a Bonnie Raitt, even the mournful, wailing guitars of Aerosmith. But Shakira can't help being herself, and that means that 'Whenever Wherever,' will bounce along with some help from Andean pan flutes and Brazilian drums, and 'Eyes Like Yours' bursts from your CD player with navel-baring, belly-dancing furor. And for those longing for Shakira in her original language, four new tracks in Spanish are included. 'The world has become so small and music is so eclectic now, and our taste is so broad that that's almost predictable that all this crossover from one culture to another was going to happen,' she said, then paused for a second, making sure everyone knew she had her priorities straight. 'But I know that rock and roll is never going to die.'

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 4, 1979, Rachael Leigh Cook was shy as a child. She knew early on that she wanted to become an actress, to use acting as a means of expressing herself. Before jumping on to the big screen, Rachael began acting in commercials and school musicals by the time she was 7, and modeling at age 10.
